I only have good things to say about Adventure Alternative. Gavin, the owner, is very knowledgable and gets personally involved in the trips they’re selling. It’s a caring company — they care about their clients, their staff, and the communities in which they operate. The trek I went on was the best trip I’ve ever made. I could’ve been pushed further, but am happy they took it relatively easy on this as one of my earlier treks. Nice to see I’ve got more to give for future treks/climbs. The guides and porters were excellent, all from the same area, and so ...
We had an unforgettable experience both on safari and during our Kilimanjaro climb. The communication and advice from you guys in the office was first class pre trip and Castro and the team in Moshi were great too.
If you’re wanting to climb Kilimanjaro – look no further than Adventure Alternative!
We wanted to say a huge thank you to Adventure Alternative for helping us with the lead up to the trip, Gavin & Chris were so helpful, assisting us with navigating Covid and providing us with all the information necessary to prepare for the climb itself.
But we really wanted to pass on a huge thanks for having such an amazing team here in Tanzania. Castro and Richard have been a fantastic ground team. But the guides and porters that we were so blessed to have met and had the lu...
Adventure Alternative Tanzania is a local safari and hiking company in Moshi. My friends and I went for safari and Kilimanjaro hiking in January 2020 and was hosted warmly by Castro Kapela and his friends, who were our driver guide and mountain guide. Before the trip, I sent quite a lot of emails to Castro and he replied quickly, answering all my questions and concerns.
The guides were all experienced and helped a lot during Safari and hiking. We all made to the summit! Thank you all guys.
Hi Andy, Gilbert and the Kenya team,
Gilbert has just dropped us off at Wilson’s and I wanted to write immediately to say thank you all for making our trip to Mt Kenya and Embu very memorable. We had a fantastic time on Mt Kenya. Cyrus was a wonderfully supportive guide – we have a new nickname for good time keeping in our family, namely ‘Cyrus time’, which means on the dot, or possibly 5 minutes earlier than agreed. His attention to detail in organising all the logistics for us here has been excellent. He didn’t bat an eyelid at my rather crazy idea of d...I have just returned from my amazing trip to Tanzania. This was my first trek with Adventure Alternative and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone. The team were hugely professional, caring and supportive. Huge thanks to Romli and the team for helping me reach the summit in time for sunrise – a magical (if VERY cold) experience!
Hi Andy, I have arrived back in Adelaide after a great African visit/holiday etc.
Firstly, I want to express my appreciation and thanks to all those who helped me get to the top of Mt Kenya and down safely. It was a fabulous trek and reasonably challenging for me but Cyrus was great and walked slowly with me all the way. He was well supported by the other members of the support team – Jackson, Daniel and chef Agostino. They fed me very well and I take my hat off to them for their encouragement and support.
Secondly, after visiting the Embu rescue centre with Gilbert, I have ...
We are just back from an amazing trip to Upper Mustang . This is our third trek with Adventure Alternative and it didn’t disappoint. Our guide Jangbu was fantastic, he was everything you need. Excellent English, informative about Mustang , extremely Organised, quietly being the scenes checking flights, hotels ,tea houses etc ,tweeking the trip to our needs, and also very easy company and good fun. Our Porter Bikash was the loveliest young man,he started the day with a smile and that’s the way he ended it …. and so so helpful. There are so many memories of this trip but I think the ...
I was part of a 2 man trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro in early January 2018. My companion Kent and I had a great time and the support crew were excellent in helping us reach our goal. I found Adventure Alternative to be very professional and the guidance that they provided was very comprehensive. Overall a great experience – thanks to all. Steve
Borneo – a wonderful and unforgettable experience with so many fantastic memories. Did so much in 3 weeks. This trip will be with me for a long time to come. Would not hesitate using AA again (this was my 2nd time) as feel safe and secure with such a responsible company and for all what they stand for.
Just a wee note to say thanks for getting my “missing bag” up the mountain for me. What initially from my perspective looked like a disaster at the start of my trek turned out to be the most fantastic 3 wks I have ever spent anywhere so far. The whole trek just blew my mind away, from the culture, scenery and mostly the people, esp the sherpa’s & porters used by adv alt. I dont think I could praise enough the likes of Pasang, Jangbu & Geljun who looked after us at times above & beyond the call of duty. Please pass on my sentiments to all of the crew out there...
I have just returned from Everest Base Camp with two friends. I just wanted to say that we all had a fantastic time – it was truly an amazing journey and a wonderful experience. The staff that Adventure Alternative employ are second to none – happy, helpful caring and informative. We were fortunate to have Tshring and Lopsang both truly amazing guys, together with five porters , one for each of us. It’s nice to know and reassuring that the company pay above “normal wages” and that each porter carries one bag. We all saw too often how much other porters carry and for much less. I...
“It was a fantastic experience. Very hard but it leaves you knowing what you are capable of and seeing challenges in a new way”
Mark and I had a great time, we are very grateful to Stoyan and the Adventure Alternative team for their organisation of this trip. Mark and I got sick on the Sunday but Stoyan was able to amend the itinerary so we were able to recover all day before our last day up in the mountains. The accommodation was great throughout, it was varied and comfortable, we’re just sorry we didn’t get the night in the hostel at the edge of the lake but I couldn’t have gone up a flight of stairs that day never mind a mountain! Our driver Nikkolai was super too, very helpful and very professi...
I wanted to send along a couple of quick notes on how much we enjoyed our trip to Kilimanjaro. Castro was an incredible logistical organizer – – he diligently checked some important points of equipment (e.g. size and type of water bottle), the attention to detail was very much the difference between summitting and being taken back to base camp early.
Our guide Romli was fantastic, fun to be around and taught us about the country and the stories of the porters, a good manager of his team and staff, and most importantly, an expert on the mountain. There wasn’t a mome...

I’d like to express my huge gratitude for the immense opportunity you’ve given me on the Bushmills Trek. The last three months have been a roller-coaster of challenges set in unbelievable locations that I’ll be talking about for many years to come! The memories of the people that we’ve met and breathtaking sights witnessed along the way will certainly stay with me forever. I feel incredibly privileged not only to have visited Africa and the Himalayas, but also to have been invited into the homes of the local people and gain a genuine insight into their ...
Brilliant trip, really sound guides, great food – got all 3 peaks done as well as 3 extra – got a day mountain biking on death road fitted in on rest day just to add to adrenaline rush! Beautiful country and really lovely people – one of the best trips so far; despite some of the peaks being at the more technical end of things I never felt under any pressure due to the guides being so competent and relaxed. Well done to Jon, Jose, Andreas and all the support team, a cracking trip all round!
Myself and 2 friends undertook a trip to Aconcagua in February 2017 with Adventure Alternative. At the time of booking there was not a trip available for the dates that we required but after talking to Gavin (director) he provided a new date that was suitable for all parties. We saw a number of other companies were providing the date we needed but it was apparent that Adventure Alternative were head and shoulders above the rest. Our trip went of without a hitch and was flawlessly organised and executed. Our guide Greg was fantastic in terms of personality and experience and was a genuine pl...
Stoyan was great! Very knowledgeable about the mountains and always put our safety first. A proper mountain person who enjoys what they do, the trip is a very good alternative to the winter Toubkal trips for the time of year.
Just a quick email of thanks regarding our recent trip to Tanzania. We had an unforgettable experience both on safari and during our Kilimanjaro climb. The communication and advice from you guys in the office was first class pre trip and Castro and the team in Moshi were great too. Tom & Sarah, UK
I had a fantastic trip and was looked after wonderfully in Kathmandu by Pasang and, on the trek itself, Lopsang and Tendi were brilliant, nothing being too much trouble and always attentive and helpful – you have a great team out in Nepal. I have some very special memories of my trek – the stunning scenery, the walk itself, the people I met on the way and the marvellous sense of achievement at reaching my goal by arriving at base camp; thank you once again for organising it for me.
On behalf of Derek and I, we just wanted to drop you a short note to say an incredible thank you for our trip to Nepal. It is slightly surreal being back in the office this morning after seeing some of the stunning scenery in Nepal, not to mention the effort involved in procuring said scenery !! We also would just like to say a special note of thanks both to Jangbu and the porter he arranged, Bikas. Jangbu’s combination of being not just a fantastic guide but also a thoroughly decent/likeable bloke added massively to the overall experience (not sure he fully understood my Glaswegian a...
I am still coming to terms in my head about all that happened on the trip, it really was a life changing experience for me. I really enjoyed even those times when my diaphragm would not expand for me to take a deep breath and the tiredness was so great I could not take another step. I want to say that the porters were absolutely fantastic, and very supportive, I don’t think I could have made it without their support. It is an experience I will never forget, and I feel jealous that I won’t be able to join you on mount Everest. The whole of the Himalayas, witnessed by me in Indian mov...
Just dropping a mail to sincerely thank you & your company for the trip to Mt Toubkal. It was a fantastic experience that I thoroughly enjoyed all round. It was my first trekking trip abroad so I was not sure what to expect. The hospitality, local knowledge, food, guidance, training & courtesy we received was top class. Give a shout out to your employees Rosie & Chris who offered a professional response to any queries I had prior to the trip. I would recommend Adventure Alternative to anyone wishing to go on the trip of a lifetime. You can quote me on that! It was a pleasure to ...

Super trip – in a short space of time you get a wonderful cultural experience combined with some of the finest treks I’ve seen and done.
Thank you so much for a fantastic week of climbing – we had a lot of laughs and learnt a lot as well. A big thank you to everyone involved in the Winter Toubkal trip. Everything about the trip was fantastic – our time in Marrakech and Imlil, the group, all the Adventure Alternative staff and, of course, the climbing. To summit four 4,000 metre peaks in 3 days was brilliant and the opportunity to practice and consolidate my winter skills and to push myself on peaks like Akioud was much appreciated. And all in just a week off work! I am already planning the next trip.
I thought Adventure Alternative was brilliant. Before I left I emailed them a couple of times about kit and AMS tablets and they (Andy MacDonald and Chris Little) replied very quickly with sound advice. On the ground in Tanzania Castro was very helpful.
I thought the food was exceptional, given the circumstances, and he said that he particularly favours getting Amini as a cook/porter as he’s so good at making the food – I thought it was lovely that he went that extra mile with little things like putting bits of green pepper in the omelette each day to make it a bit more inter...

The Kilimanjaro climb is a once in a lifetime adventure. It waz brilliantly organised by adventure alternative team. Evertyhing was designed to make it as comfortable as possible from the arrival in Moshi to the departure day. The 7 day trek on the mountain is a great experience, the last day is really hard and nobody’s sure to get to the top (I did not) but the whole experience is fascinating and the nature and views are amazing.

For the keen hill walker and adventurer with good fitness and someone who enjoys camping, this trip to Kilimanjaro is a real ‘bucket list’ item. The summit is spectacular, a crater over half a mile wide and nearly 6000 metres elevation.
A great trip with lots of variety and interest. The trip was very well organised and the people we were in contact with were very hospitable. Definitely a trip to recommend!
I’d like to thank you very much for all you and your team have done for me. Again, this was a really tough experience, but you and your team looked very well after me. The team was great from the guides to the cook and porter. Castro also picked me up and dropped me to the airport, as arranged and gave us the briefing for the 7 days. I couldn’t be happier. I would be more than happy to recommend you to anyone who is thinking to climb Kilimanjaro. It is not an easy task, far from it, but your team helped making it easier!

We started out with a charity climb of Mt Kilimanjaro for Alzheimer’s Australia NSW. There was a group of 18 people to start ranging from early 20s to 64!
Then 5 of us moved onto a post climb safari in Ngorogoro, Lake Manyara and Tarangire which AA head office set up for us. It was nice having the same operator covering both so they knew the drill and made the transition out of Moshi so simple.
We did our own thing for a couple of weeks then met up with another AA team in Kenya for a Masai Mara safari with just my husband and I.
Adventure Alternative from the main...
I think I speak for both myself and Orla when I say that we certainly got more out of our efforts than we gave. It was a wonderful experience and a great holiday to boot! Your staff are amazing, both Mungai and Gilbert were fantastic hosts, a credit to themselves and Moving Mountains/Adventure Alternative
Will keep Nepal in the back of my mind, but for now Kenya is very much at the front of it!
Just thought i would drop you a line to say how fantastic an experience the climb was, we loved every minute of it. As you will know we both achieved the summit with no real ill effects from the altitude and best of all no Diamox. Lipman, Godfrey, Kamanda, Simba and John were superb leaders all in their own styles they have my up most respect.
I am now considering whether to do Elbrus next year although (also) seriously considering a trip to Everest base camp

My daughter her husband and myself climbed Kilimanjaro with adventure alternative and we all made the summit on the 29thSept. We had an amazing trip, it wasn’t easy and if it was there would be no challenge .Many thanks to our guides and porters for the way they looked after us without their help and encouragement we would never have made it. We met a young man Kelly from Kenya he is living proof of the wonderful work Adventure Alternative does. He went from street child to the director of the company, and his enthusiasm is just a joy. Our group of 8 have just arrived back into Moshi after successfully reaching the summit. Just wanted to say thank you for a well coordinated expedition, we were very happy we went with Adventure Alternative.
I also wanted to pay mention to the excellent job done by all of the guides, but particularly Kamanda who looked after us each step of the way and always made sure the pace was just right. We will certainly look into your company for future adventures.

I just wanted to say a big WOW, WOW,WOW about our experience on the Masai Mari safari. It is one that both myself and Ryan will never forget. Our experience is hugely down to Kelly and Kamau who were truly amazing from start to finish. They met us at the hotel and Kelly had the biggest warming smile and welcomed us with open arms. The journey to the safari was long, dusty and tiring but Kelly’s infectious laugh kept us smiling all the way through. We were so well looked after throughout the whole trip.
Kelly’s knowledge of Kenya was incredible and we kept saying how lucky...
Just wanted to say a massive thank you for the other week with the trek. I had a really great time! Was a big challenge and completely different to anything I’d done before but I haven’t stopped telling people about it since. Was a great adventure 🙂 I’d love to come along on another one some time.
I would be delighted to recommend AA for providing a service to clients who wish climb Kilmanjaro or go on safari.
Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you for helping to organise a fantastic trip to Mount Kenya! It really was an unforgettable trip and we all hugely enjoyed it!
The organisation of the whole trip was faultless and I was so impressed with everyone I have met here from AA. Cyrus was fantastic and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide, along with the brilliant team of porters, not forgetting the fantastic cook. He fed us very very well!
I would recommend anyone who believes in small and personal and not answerable to wealthy shareholders to travel with Alternative Adventure you will not be disappointed. Thank You, Gary, UK

Gavin started Adventure Alternative in 1991 during a long period of travelling, working in a wide variety of jobs, climbing mountains and organising expeditions. A solo trek across the Sahara Desert aged twenty one was a benchmark experience after which travel and adventurous exploits became a way of life.
Born in Kent, Gavin left his home at aged fifteen to attend secondary school in Western Australia. He then moved to Northern Ireland to study English Literature at University and...

Adventure Alternative is run as profit-making venture but our character is more of a social enterprise. Where possible we try to ensure that every holiday has an identifiable local benefit, and this is connected to Moving Mountains which is a non-profit that Gavin set up to manage many community projects and developmental programmes and complement the revenue that the company was bringing.
Our vision has been to run a sustainable tourism business that allows everyone who is involved in providing a holiday to share in the economic benefits. We know that at a local level tourism can really improve people’s lives so we work closely with local people and help them develop a holiday that is well run and provides a high quality experience for our visitors.
