What Our Adventurers Think:
Borneo – a wonderful and unforgettable experience with so many fantastic memories. Did so much in 3 weeks. This trip will be with me for a long time to come. Would not hesitate using AA again (this was my 2nd time) as feel safe and secure with such a responsible company and for all what they stand for.
Watch the Borneo Wildlife Tour video..
This video shows the scenery of Deramakot and the Kinabatangan River and gives an idea of this holiday with the river safaris and the 4×4 journeys in the forest.
Typically the night time safaris with our guides over several days will result in many spectacular wildlife sightings, in particular the big cats which are now endangered.
Borneo Wildlife Tour Itinerary
The arrival and departure airport is Sandakan on the east side of Sabah. The trip is eight days in total, with the first two in Sandakan visiting Sepilok and the centres, the next three days at Deramakot, then two days on the Kinabatangan river and the last day back to Sandakan.
Arriving at Sandakan airport, a 30 minute transfer to the Sepilok Forest Edge lodge, situated next to the world famous wildlife centres. Most flights into Sandakan tend to arrive after lunch so the rest of the day can be spent resting after the flight and visiting the environs of the lodge and acclimatising to the heat and humidity. There may be time to visit the Sepilok orangutan centre and see the feeding time at 5pm.
Accommodation in the Sepilok Forest Edge Resort. Note sometimes due to availability we have to choose other lodges but they will always be in the Sepilok area and of the same high quality.
Meals: Dinner only
Standard twin chalet at the Forest Edge Resort
After breakfast the guide will come to meet you for a full day visiting the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre to see these iconic primates at close quarters and learn more about the rehabilitation and conservation work that takes place here.
Next, visit the Sun Bear Conservation Center, established in 2008, which provides care and rehabilitation for orphaned and captive Bornean sunbears with the long-term goal of releasing them to the wild. Spare time can be spent looking for wildlife around the resort where hornbills and orangutans are sometimes seen. Then there is the Rainforest Discovery centre and in the evening a night walk.

After checkout there is a drive of 2 hours to Telupid town for lunch and then a further 2 hours drive through palm oil plantations and forest to Deramokot Forest Reserve. On this first day there is only time for 2 hour night safari after the drive from the coast, but the following days you will have the vehicles available for 7 hours out of every 24. Extra hours can be purchased locally for RM200 (~ £35) per hour per group or pre-booked for RM300 per day per group subject to availability.
Deramakot is the jewel in the crown of the Sabah Forestry Department. It covers an area of over 100,000 hectares along with the adjacent Tangkulap Reserve. It was the first forest reserve to be recognised by the Forest Stewardship Council for good forest governance and since our company pioneered nature tourism in the reserve it has become famous for its astonishing mammal and bird diversity. Over half of the reserve is Lowland Mixed Dipterocarp Forest, with the rest including Kerangas Forest and seasonal freshwater swamp forest.
The exact program at Deramakot will depend on the weather and on recent animal sightings. Your wildlife guide will discuss the options with you but as a rule there are 4×4 safaris and walking safaris every day. Each safari is shared and we offer 7 hours per 24 which is much more than the usual two hours in other reserves. There is also an optional 4×4 drive to a safe swimming area in a clean river which is good for picnics. The vehicle can be booked privately but on a first come first served basis so do contact us in advance.
Accommodation at Deramakot has simple rooms split into several chalets on a small hill of 3 bedrooms in each. Although they have air con and hot water ensuite bathrooms with 24/7 electricity these rooms are not considered ‘luxury’. They are perfectly clean and comfortable though. Meals are cooked by in-house cooks so can be varied to suit requirements, and these are served in the restaurant area, consisting of local Asian dishes and fruits. We provide a bar of palm oil based soap but do bring your own biodegradable toiletries as well.
If Deramakot is completely full for bookings on other bespoke dates then we have the option of using a lodge in the Danum Valley Conservation Reserve which is nearby, but that would subject to availability.

Time for morning birding before breakfast and check out by 9am. You will say farewell to the AA Borneo guide who stays at Deramakot all the time and then there is a 4 hour drive to the Kinabatangan river village of Sukau.
Sukau was the first village on the Kinabatangan River to develop nature tourism and is now a busy hub of lodges and homestays. We will be using the Sukau Greenview Lodge on the river for accommodation which has recently upgraded its rooms and they also provide in-house wildlife guides. From here there is also the option to visit the Gomontong Caves if they are open.
The afternoon boat safari on the first day begins at 4.00pm for 2 hours with dinner at 6.30pm. There is also a night cruise for an hour at 7.30pm to see kingfishers, Buffy fish owls, wild cat, snakes, frogs and maybe crocodile. If you are lucky, then pygmy elephant, wild orangutan and many other primates are also possible.
The dawn chorus of birds and insects and animals is the start of the morning boat safari at around 6.00am on the second day, which lasts for 2 hours followed by breakfast and then a jungle walk for an hour. After lunch there is an opportunity to visit the Gomontong Cave if it is open and hopefully see the bats, and at night time there is night walk in the jungle.
Longer river trips are possible, please contact us for more information about this. We can also offer an upgrade to the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort which is further along the river, this is subject to availability.

Maroon Langur
There might be time for an early dawn cruise before having breakfast at about 7.30am and then driving back to Sandakan airport for your departure. Expect to be back in Sandakan for late morning if you are booking outbound flights. There are flights to Kota Kinabalu at 1240 which work well for the itinerary, or afternoon flights back to Kuala Lumpur.
Meals: Breakfast only
We have a number of potential add-on options to this holiday including continuing to one of the other reserves like Danum Valley or Tabin, or a visit to the nearby islands. Danum Valley in particular has the upmarket Borneo Rainforest Lodge, or we sometimes use quite simple accommodation called Infapro just outside the entrance to Danum.

Being geographically located within the equatorial region, Sabah has uniform temperatures throughout the year with average annual temperature of about 27°C (ranging from 31°C and 23°C). However, seasonal climatic variation does have some influence on the atmospheric temperature and causes it to fluctuate. Expect heat and humidity all the time.
Surveys at Deramakot have revealed a remarkable mammal diversity. About 75% of mammals in Sabah can be found here, including six of the seven terrestrial Totally Protected Species, namely Orang-
utan, Bornean Pygmy Elephant, Sun Bear, Clouded Leopard, Tembadau and Proboscis Monkey.
It was reported that there were at least 75 species of mammals (excluding bats), 220 species of birds and over 100 species of reptiles, amphibians and fish recorded in DFR. At least nine medium to large mammal species (including sub-species) are endemic, namely Red Leaf Monkey (Presbytis rubicunda), Bornean Gibbon (Hylobates muelleri), Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus), Orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus morio), Thick-spined Porcupine (Thecurus crassispinus), Bornean Pygmy Elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis), Bornean Yellow
Muntjac (Muntiacus atherodes), Clouded Leopard (Neofelis diardi borneensis) and Bay Cat (Pardofelis badia). Small carnivore diversity includes the Leopard cat, Marbled cat, Malay badger, Yellow-throated marten, several species of Civet, Smooth otters and the Hairy-nosed otter (Lutra sumatrana).

What's It Like Visiting the Rainforest?
This is not a physically demanding trip in terms of the activities that you will undertake. The focus is on enjoying the environment and surroundings in an adventurous but comfortable way. However it is hot and humid and you will need to manage your energy levels, making sure to rest during the heat of the day and make the most of the night time safaris.
The rainforest is a clean and pure place to visit. The canopy offers excellent shade from the intense sun keeping temperatures cooler than in the cities. We travel using tracks and trails which are used by vehicles. You can go on short walks with the guides around the chalets for an hour or so during the day, which is easy.
It is noisy, the forest at night is full of animals making noise, so do bring ear plugs if you find it hard to sleep. Inside the lodges and around the restaurant area at Deramakot it is comfortable, not luxurious but clean and with facilities like flush toilets, electricity, fans and air con. The beds have bedding and there are wardrobes in the rooms.
At the lodge on the river and in Sandakan, you will have everything you need. It is comfortable and the rooms will have flush toilets, fans and electricity.
