Gavin started Adventure Alternative in 1991 during a long period of travelling the world, working in a wide variety of jobs, climbing mountains and going on long expeditions. What Our Bolivia Adventurers Think:

Brilliant trip, really sound guides, great food – got all 3 peaks done as well as 3 extra – got a day mountain biking on death road fitted in on rest day just to add to adrenaline rush! Beautiful country and really lovely people – one of the best trips so far; despite some of the peaks being at the more technical end of things I never felt under any pressure due to the guides being so competent and relaxed. Well done to Jon, Jose, Andreas and all the support team, a cracking trip all round!

About Bolivia

La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, sits at 3,650m above sea level. Nestled in a high mountain valley on the west side of the nation, it is the cultural capital of Bolivia. This high-altitude city is a great jumping off point to visit the famous Lake Titicaca, Mequeno Alpamayo, Huayna Potosi, Illimani, and many more. Having a big city like La Paz to use for acclimatization provides endless opportunities for cultural exploration nearby.

The Cordillera Real attracts mountaineers, trekkers, and nature lovers from across the world. Mostly composed of granite, these peaks extend from the southeast end of Lake Titicaca all the way to La Paz. Most of these stunning mountains are glaciated from the moisture coming from the Amazon rainforest lowlands. This unexpected twist makes these peaks both technical and beautiful. With countless peaks above 4,000m, there are endless possibilities for mountain enthusiasts.

Another gem of Bolivia is the famed Lake Titicaca. This lake covers nearly 8,300m, making it the largest lake in South America. The lake sits on the border between Peru and Bolivia. This region is known for its man-made reed islands and floating villages of the Puno people. This ancient culture holds agricultural and building traditions that date back to the time of the Quechua people. Rich history and culture as well being breathtaking beauty, make this massive lake a must-see while in Bolivia.

Moving east across the country towards Brazil, you encounter the tropical lowland regions of Snata Cruz, Beni, and Pando. If jungle terrain is what you seek you must visit Noel Kempff Mercado National Park. This park contains two of the best waterfalls in the Amazon. It is often an overlooked spot by travelers and tourists in favor of the more popular Amazonian regions of Peru and Brazil. Find solitude and endless expanse of jungle in Noel Kempff Mercado National Park.

Another site not to miss during your time in Bolivia is the Salar de Uyuni. Due almost straight south of La Paz, the Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world. Filled with various salt water lakes and a surprising amount of wildlife this region certainly provides a unique backdrop that has to been seen to be believed.

Bolivia is a mountaineering mecca with options to witness stunning biodiversity and unique cultural heritages. Adventure Alternative offers incredible climbs up the Cordillera Real’s world-class peaks while getting the opportunity to explore La Paz’s nearby attractions.
